How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals combine seven letters. Symbols are added when a smaller value follows a larger one (VI = 6) and subtracted when a smaller value comes before a larger one (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900).

A symbol is never repeated more than three times in a row, which is why 4 is written IV rather than IIII.
